Rick Smith's Manchester United Weekly Blog ...

Where's Wesley?

As soon as the euphoria died down from the 8-2 mauling of Arsenal one thing was on a lot of United fans minds, Wesley Sneijder.

In the end he didn't arrive, every fan wants a "marquee" signing and many were upset that this wasn't Sneijder.

But did we really need him?

Many argued that we can't win the Champions League without him, with Barcelona in a stage of domination at home and abroad many felt we needed a proven world class creative midfielder, something that has been lacking long before Paul Scholes retirement. But let's not forget the only team to beat us in Europe last year were Barca. No one else even got close.

I would of loved Sneijder to sign, he is truly world class and proven at Club and International level, he would of added something, there is no doubt about that, but the fact his he isn't coming, and probably never will. Signing him in January would make no sense as he would be cup tied in Europe and unless we have a disastrous campaign or our younger players don't progress how Sir Alex would like, I can't see us going back in for him. Anyway I think January's (if any) and next summers targets are already earmarked.

So we have to do what we've done so much in the past, look to within.

So let's look at the positives shall we?
The addition of Ashley Young is massive for us on the wing, and its already evident that he has slotted right in on the left. Nani is improving all the time and at the end of last season Anderson was starting to show signs of turning into an important player and not a squad one. Valencia was missing for most of the season and showed when he came back how important a player he can be for us. And let's not forget Rooneys' creative powers dropping in the hole, with him more likely to be partnered with Hernandez or Welbeck than with Berbatov.

And then we have Tom Cleverley, another source of debate by United fans on whether he can play to the standard we need to beat Barca, well I think its obvious the answer is no, not yet. But there's no doubt in my mind he will make it at United. But this is a big season for him, there's a lot of pressure to deliver but I don't think there's one Red I've heard from who thinks he can't handle it and progress to being the main man in United's midfield for years to come.

Let's just hope in May we'll all be saying "Wesley who?"
